Mysore the city of Palaces, a beautiful city and a wonderful tourist destination


Mysore is known for its Palaces and heritage structures. Various things are named after this city like Mysore dasara, Mysore Paintings, Mysore Pak, Mysore Sandal Soap, Mysore Ink, Mysore Peta, Mysore Silk and even Mysore Masala Dosa. This city is one of the major tourist destination in India.

Mysore dasara festival is held in Mysore Palace where large no of tourists come from across the world. Dasara usually comes in the month of September-October. According to history, vijay dashmi denotes the victory of truth over evil and in that day Goddess Chamundeshwari (Durga) killed the demon Mahishasura and after that the city got its name Mysore.

Mysore is named as the city of Palace as there are large no of Palaces such as Mysore Palace (Amba vilas), Jayalakshmi vilas Mansion, Lalita Mahal Palace, JaganMohan Palace, Rajendra vilas Palace, Karanji Mansion, Cheluvamba Mansion etc constructed by Royal family at that time and some of them are now converted into Museum and hotels.

Places to Visit in Mysore


Mysore Palace - This is one of the major Palace of Mysore. It is situated in City's Center. Coming to Mysore is incomplete without visiting this palace, the former residence of the royal family of Mysore. It is also known as Amba Vilas Palace. On Sunday's and public Holidays, the Palace is illuminated with light all around , the experience is extra ordinary.

Chamundeshwari Temple - Temple is 13kms from Mysore railway station. It is located at the height of around 1000ft on the Chamundi Hills. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. During journey to temple, you can find a big idol of bull (called Nandi) which was made out of a single rock and is 5m tall. The view from the temple is quite amazing.

Karanji Lake -  It is 2kms from Mysore Palace. It is perfect site for relaxing and celebrating a day out with the family, you can bring packed food and celebrate picnic with your family. The park has a huge enclosure for birds where you can closely observe the birds. You can also enjoy boating in this lake.

Mysore Zoo - It is one of the oldest and most popular zoo in India. It is 3kms from railway station. Here you can see many exotic animals like Giraffes, Zebras, White dear, chimpangee, Orangutans, Porcupines, African Elephant, Rhinoceros etc. You can visit the zoo at any time of the year. 

Brindavan Garden - It is about 19kms from the city near KRS dam. The Garden spreads over 60 acres of land and it is pleasant throughout the year. It is built across the Kaveri river. The main attraction at the Brindavan Garden in Mysore is Musical fountain coupled with Laser lights and are synchronized to music in the evening.

St. Philomena's Church - It is 2kms from Mysore Palace. The construction of Church follows the victorian style. It is beautiful and one of the most distinct landmark of the city, it looks even more beautiful in the evening and is given religious importance.

Rail Museum - It is very near to Mysore railway station and about 3kms from city center. It was built in 1979 by Indian railways. It shows the journey and development of Indian railways. The first steam engine along with first signals is present here. There is battery operated mini toy train that takes the tourists around the grounds of the museum.


Shopping

You can enjoy shopping for Mysore silk sarees, Mysore sandal wood handicrafts, Incense sticks and traditional Mysore pantings. you can find so many shops for purchasing these things.

How to Reach Mysore


By Air - The nearest Airport is Bangalore.
By Train - There are so many trains from Bangalore and other major cities.
By Bus - City is well connected with state and public transport.
